CONGRATULATIONS TO JUANNE & EUGENE

Posted on December 17 2007   |

It's baby time for Juanne and Eugene! We celebrated last weekend by showering Juanne with best wishes and gifts for her expected baby boy, Liam. Thanks for coming out everybody. I only have a few pics available because these were the only ones I had time to take. Please forward more pics if you have any.

PEOPLE DO CHANGE

Posted on November 15 2007   |

I used to nag at Eugene about how he always forgets: forgets what I said and what I didn't say; which night we're supposed to go to COSTCO; which night is my GNO; who's coming over when.

Now he is more organized and calendar-committed than I. He's been so focused about getting work done on the house- but not only that, he had detailed every task which we still need to accomplish, and even wrote down key dates like Thanksgiving Dinner, Juanne's shower and a get-together with our next-door neighbor as a way of motivating himself to work faster, and ultimately to make me happy MUAHAHAAHA.

Take a look at The List ...kinda scary.

LESS COOKING, MORE WATER

Posted on November 13 2007   |

I'm placing a temporary HOLD on posting any new recipes. Sure it's been fun whipping up a different dish everyday, testing out my new kitchen gadgets, and indulging in my newly renovated kitchen....but this has got to stop. The joy of cooking... and eating has consequences: I think I've gained about 2 inches in my waistline, and I'm not EVEN gonna get on the scale to find out how much I really weigh. Arghhh

Preparation of dinner and the clean up thereafter is very time and energy-consuming. I get exhausted and tend to ditch the gym. So I've decided to hit the gym first right after work, and if time allows, make a nice home-cooked meal, or have Eugene prepare dinner (this means frozen pizza or Popeye's).

The real problem with me is not "weight-gain"- I sometimes do not gain even a pound, yet I still observe "abnormalities"- seems like the weight or fat is redistributed in my body to undesired areas (again, "ARGH"). When I make an effort to "reshape" my body working out, I do tend to lose a few pounds, but it's really hard to fight "INELASTICITY"- this is my worst enemy. My skin is not as taught as it used to be. I don't think my skin was very elastic to begin with though. It's quite a challenge but along with regular heavy exercise and plenty of WATER, I should be *elastic* very very soon.

WATER is my topic of the day: No, water does not enhance breasts (as this picture might infer), WATER is an absolute cure to many problems we (women) have. Did you know that WATER itself probably is the best solution for a great looking skin? Before you spend a few hundred dollars on a skin cream, and before you purchase any and every shimmery dewy powder/application, try drinking 8 glasses of water a day. Drinking water prevents skin conditions such as dryness and discoloration (the black rings under your eyes!). Drinking water keeps the surface of your skin moist and gives you that supple, moisturized look.

Drinking water detoxifies your system by flushing toxins that accumulate in your skin. Puffy eyes? Who woulda thought? That's actually caused by dehydration...not bloating!

Want greater elasticity and firmness? Water. Yup. Exercise...and water. Nuff said.

GRAINS

Posted on November 7 2007   |

My new favorite foods: rice - absoultely any kind of rice: long grain, jasmine, saffron, basmati, arborio for risotto; couscous and quynoh. Forget low carb diets, I can't live without rice and Eugene can't have one meal without pasta, rice or potatoes (and grease). So ontop of taking on a task of making a balanced 3-part meal every night, I have to make sure I include a nice risotto dish or fetuccini (with lots of butter and cheese) to keep both of us happy. I've decided to take a different approach and cut down on the daily serving or buttery pasta and risotto and replace them with something healthier on alternate days- couscous and quynoh. They're grains- light and fluffy kinda like rice and pasta, and add volume to dishes such as salads and serve well as side dishes.

Sunday's dish was quynoh served as a side dish (GRAIN)
Monday's dish was scalloped potatotes served as a side dish (STARCH)
Tuesday- I needed to eat Korean food so I prepared my special spicy honey chicken dish (recipe coming soon)
Tonight- I'm taking a break from cooking. Tonight is soju night for me and Sarah (U-N-ME! U-N-ME Sarah!)

I've prepared a simple 3-minute quynoh recipe for a simple side dish. Serve it with a sandwich, fish, beef or slap it ontop of almost any kind of salad. Click here for recipe.

TRICK-OR-TREAT

Posted on October 30 2007   |

I know, I know. I'm going overboard... but until Eugene and I have a "little-one", Hogan is going to be the baby in the family. We bought a lady bug costume from eBay (a little small) but I thought it was just adorable. I didn't know he could look any cuter than he already is...but he does :)

The other day, we found an awesome pumpkin patch in West Hollywood: petting zoo, beautiful props for great photos, huge selection of pumpkins, picnic area, and a shop. You can visit their site at www.mrbonespumpkinpatch.com. You guys should definitely go. I think Hogan (and us) had the most fun with the goats, sheep and chickens. They were very interested in Hogan and completely disinterested in us. They herded over to Hogan's direction and followed his every step the entire time we were at the petting zoo. So cute!

These pictures don't do any justice so take a 1 hour tour for yourself in your spare time within the next 2 days. Happy Halloween!

DID I LOSE ALL MY VISITORS?

Posted on October 24 2007   |

I have a lot to share with you guys but I've been pretty busy as of late. Especially without internet at home, I cannot post regularly. That internet problem is one of many hurdles we've had to go through at our new place but I'll spare you the details on that and all our other hurdles. As Eugene (the optimist) puts it, EVERY WEEK IS LIKE CHRISTMAS. I can continue to complain about the discomfort of living weeks without a kitchen, or shades, but why? It doesn't get anywhere....but like he put it, the upside is EVERY WEEK REALLY IS LIKE CHRISTMAS - it's like opening a huge box of gifts.

- Last week, our cabinets and appliances were completed so I began to cook. What a relief since you all know how I love to cook at the end of a work day!

- Bathroom and laundry plumbing problems were fixed so now I wash my clothes in the machine whenever i want! Don't take this for granted people. Having a machine and dryer at home is such a blessing! I'm so thankful I don't have to wait around for a machine like I used to at my apartment...which is what I had been doing all my life.

SO getting to the real point of this blog----> I've discovered the best kitchen necessity! Cast iron pots and skillets - super durable, easy to clean, and no known health hazards like non-stick pans and analons do. You can practically cook anything on them....except eggs. It is a slower cooker than steels so it is ideal for delicate dishes like risotto, and fish. I even made dduk-bok-kki on my risotto pan. And you can get them in different colors. Only downside is that they are super heavy.

IMAGINE YOURSELF HERE

Posted on September 13 2007   |

Isn't this place beautiful? A mystery of sorts...guess where this is? Not Alaska....Not Iceland. It is the Salt Mounds of Bolivia. I had never seen or heard of this place until my co-worker, Richard (avid traveler of South America), shared this with me. Thanks Richard! I'm gonna have to tag Bolivia as one of my South American destinations. But S.A. is not at the top of my agenda so I'll just enjoy Bolivia with this photo until then.

Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat that covers over 4,000 square miles. Previously a giant prehistoric lake, it left behind 2 smaller lakes and 2 salt flats. It contains 10 billion tons of salt.

BLOOD, SWEAT, LOTS OF TEARS

Posted on August 23 2007   |

Truly, a lot of work has gone into the rebuilding of our new home (we pretty much gutted everything on the inside and tore down the jungle on the outside). Eugene, my Dad and Eugene's friend Jeff have dedicated so much time and energy into this project. Thank you ----@

All I recall in the past 4 weeks are our daily trips to my now-favorite shops: Home Depot, Lowes and Target, pulling nails off the floor, cutting down bamboo, sweeping, and cleaning cleaning and cleaning, driving around my Dad's mega-van to pick up furniture, plywood, bathtubs, and the noise of Jeff and Eugene hammering away in an effort to demolish the kitchen and bathroom...but now all that hard work with the mess and chaos have become fruitful: I love going home, unloading groceries and walking just a few steps up to my front door, waking up early (well..earlier) to walk my dog, watering the streetside lawn, planting roses, and sweeping and swifering the wooden floors everyday (we'll see how long that lasts though).

We've learned a lot- having gone through purchases and sales, renovating homes and have become very interested in flipping homes. Have you seen that show "Flipping Out" It's pretty entertaining- a reality show of a pretty successful gay house flipper mixed in with a lot of drama who works with his ex-boyfriend in the buying, renovating and selling of mid-size homes right in our West Hollywood/Hancock Park area. Anyway, it's entertaining, you should watch it.

So, we'll be posting BEFORE and AFTER shots of our home soon if you're interested. Hope to have everyone over soon.
